Hobie Beach and Boardwalk panorama

I took this panorama of Hobie Beach with the Boardwalk Hotel and Conference Centre in the background from the Jester the other day.  Cruising on the Jester does give one a whole new angle to look at the Port Elizabeth beachfront from and you just realise again how beautiful our beachfront is.

Boardwalk wonderland

After dark the Boardwalk Complex truly turns into a wonderland with all the lights lining the building and reflecting in the water of the lake.

The best view in PE

What is the best viewpoint in Port Elizabeth?  In my opinion its the view from the top of the Donkin Lighthouse.  This is the view across the Donkin Reserve showing the King Edward Hotel, Grey Institute, Donkin Street Houses and some of the Route 67 art pieces, including the 65m high flagpole.  To think of it, I should have taken a panorama towards the city centre side as well. Next time, I promise. 

Kings Beach Panorama

I've been looking at old posts and dates and realised its been just over four years since I took over Port Elizabeth Daily Photo from Sue and Max. WOW, I can't believe that I've been at it for four years already.  I also noticed that in a couple of weeks PEDP is coming up to 2000 posts of which by then I would have done 1500.  But I'll wait for the actual occasion to get all soppy and emotional.  Not just quite yet.

 

A week ago I posted a picture of Kings Beach from the harbour wall and even though it only got two comments the actual picture got shared around Facebook by quite a few people.  Now if only that many people would see the post on the blog and then comment on it. Today's picture is a panorama of Kings Beach and was also taken from the Port Elizabeth Harbour wall side looking south.

Taxi's in the wall

 

One of the latest art pieces to be installed in the city centre as part of the Route 67 initiative is a row of taxi's inbedded in the wall on Whites Road across the road from the Opera House.  The piece was done by Mark Wilby in collaboration with Bongani Njalo, Bamanye Ngxale, Jason Olivier, Gabriel Chaponda and Siya Mboniswa.  The discription in the Route 67 brochure states the following:

 

"History is often shaped by momentous events, while cities with their alleys, streets and avenues are formed by the layered rhythms of the daily necessity.  This rhythm of place, shaped by the everyday, becomes the song of the city."

 

 

South End panorama

I don't think a lot of people know that the South End Museum Heritage Trail exists.  The trail starts at the South End Museum and can be done self-guided with the help of a guide book available from the museum or on a guided walk along with one of the museum's tourist guides.  The trail takes in a some of the historic sites that are linked to old South End with the St Peter's Church ruins in my mind being the most prominent site on the trail.

The view from the top of the Donkin Lighthouse is truly magnificent doesn't matter which way you look.  This is looking south at the beachfront.  Click on the picture to see the original size.
