An Afrikaans inscription in a Catholic Cathedral

Imagine my surprise when I found an Afrikaans inscription on a plaque behind the baptismal font in the St Augustine's Catholic Cathedral. Very unusual.

Don't forget to turn the water off

Somebody with a great sense of humor and the environment took a permanent marker to a public shower at Kings Beach.  Don't get me wrong, I don't condone illegal graffiti, but I bet he's (she?) a regular walker who has had to turn the tap off after people on more than one occasion.  I really like the "The universe thanks you" written to the side.

Free parking

 Free parking. Ideal for summer transport.  Spotted at the entrance to the Beach Hotel.  I don't know how many people take their bicycles to the hotel but I do find the sign very quirky.

Beachfront sign - also a grass safe house

Don't you just love (or hate) it when people do something with all the good intentions in the world and then afterwards realize that they just didn't think it through properly.  I spotted this sign at Kings Beach the other day and it clearly falls in that category.  The sign is part of the Kings Beach Park development pointing out the skate park, play park, beach and other things.  The sign has a backing with a glass front but the problem is the gap in between...  It's here where the grass has found refuge from the law mowers and weed eaters.  Couldn't help laugh out loud when I saw it.

Do more of what makes you happy

I found this piece of graffiti at the Kings Beach Skate Park last weekend.  The first thing that I noticed was that it was done with what looked like pastels and not paint. Interesting.  The main thing though is the message and even though this one is aimed at skateboarders, I think its an universal one.  DO MORE OF WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.  A motto I have decided I want to implement more in my own life.  Life is short and one has to do what makes one happy.  I am very fortunate that I have a job I love and really enjoy.  A job that allows me to actually do what makes me happy.  My hobbies of taking photos, blogging and Geocaching also makes me happy so if I can do more of what makes me happy, why not?   

An unique adult experience... discover something you never knew existed

Most people know where Adult World is on Russell Road.  Not because they've been there but because there is a big sign outside.  Just above it is a billboard that has been taken up by Mambo's Plastic Warehouse.  The two together though makes for a very odd combination.  What is seen can never been unseen......

Furry friends welcome

Port Elizabeth's beachfront is popular with everybody. Joggers, walkers, surfers, families, cyclists, skateboarders, people walking their furry four legged friends, visitors and locals alike.  All of these were delighted to see the redevelopment of Something Good and all of these are welcome there.  Yes, even the furry friends.

Today's post may not be of an landmark or attraction around Port Elizabeth but rather a bit of a quirky sight I encountered during a Hinterveld Mohair Mill tour I was on the other day.

Beware: Bumpy Road, Remove Dentures

I wonder how many people drive down (or up) Villiers Road in Walmer every day without ever noticing this sign painted on a log next to the road.  I for one never saw it until I was taken there in search of a geocache recently.  The bumpy road it refers to leads to the Walmer Woods driving range. 

Rusty Roadsigns

There is one set of road signs that always grab my attention.  I may not pass there often, but the rusty road signs on the old R335 just north of the Zuurberg Pass is my favourite road sign in the whole world.  From this intersection there are four road going in each of the wind directions.  South will take toy towards Addo and Port Elizabeth via the old Zuurberg Pass, the original road north from Algoa Bay.  South takes you to Somerset East, west towards Jansenville (it will take you to Somerset East as well) and east to the N10 that crosses the Olifantskop Pass from Port Elizabeth heading north.

The deadline for complaints was yesterday

Its weekend, and a busy one at that.  The Kirkwood Wildsfees is on in the Sundays River Valley and the National Arts Festival has kicked off in Grahamstown so I don't want to hear any complaints.  Like this sign I spotted in the Padlangs Farm Stall outside Patensie says, "The deadline for complaints was yesterday."

Fail!!!

Today's post is slightly tongue in cheek.  The association with Port Elizabeth is puerly the fact that these adverts seem to pop up all over the city and get stuck to bus stops, power boxes, freeway pillars and even on the back of stop signs.  The thing that caught my eye was the fact that the middle advert says "Abortions" and "Penis enlargement" followed by "Relationship problems".  I think those three sum up the problem right there.  The middle one leads to the first having to take place which probably causes the latter.  Ps, I took out the good doc's phone number just in case anybody on here got the idea to phone him regarding the middle one (or any of the other two for that matter).

Old Road signs

I don't know why but for some reason this road sign is my favorite road sign in the world.  It stands just north of the Zuurberg Pass on the old road inland.  From this point you can head north towards Somerset East on the R335, west towards Jansenville on the R400 or east to get to the main road (N10) between Port Elizabeth and Cradock.  South will take you past Ann's Villa and over the old Zuurberg Pass towards Port Elizabeth. Just a pity it wasn't a nice blue sky day when I passed it the other day.

Kiss and Ride

I've heard of "No Parking" and "No Stopping" zones, but a "Kiss and Ride" zone was a first to me when I passed VW SA in Uitenhage the other day.  The sign is by the front entrance of the factory on a lay by which means that you stop to drop your loved one off, kiss them and go.

No Entry

This Fiscal Shrike was sitting on the No Entry sign in the Addo Elephant National Park.  It was as if he was guarding it and saying, "Don't you dare pass me!"

No lifeguards on duty

Mmmmm... Nope, I don't think I'll need a lifeguard taking a shower...

Rusty road signs

I encountered this rusty old road sign on the dirt road just over the Zuurberg north of Port Elizabeth. It stands on an intersection on the R400 / R335 dirt roads and directs you to Port Elizabeth via the old Zuurberg Pass which used to be the main road between Port Elizabeth and the interior or via the N10 over the Olifantskop Pass.

Beware of Dung beetles

Addo Elephant National Park is home to the Flightless Dung Beetle. This specific species are a protected species and are only found in Addo and surrounding game reserves. The make use of elephant dung to make their dung balls in which they lay their eggs. Due to the elephants being shot out in the early part of the 1900's, the number of dung beetles also took a drastic dip. Today the numbers are slowly increasing and there is even a guest lodge close to the part that has a breeding project for the flightless dung beetle. Visitors to the park are asked not to drive over the elephant dung as there my be dung beetles "working" in it.

Beware of lions

A Beware of Lions sign at one of the lookout areas in the Addo Elephant National Park. Visitors to the park aren't allowed to get out of their cars in the park except for two or three designated areas. And even when you get out there you have to be conscious of the fact that there are free ranging lions in the park.

Water crisis

While the rest of the country has had wide spread flooding over the last month or so, the parts of the Eastern Cape and Southern Cape, including Port Elizabeth and environs, are in the mids of the worst drought in 150 years. In some areas the situation has entered crisis proportions. Some towns has just about run out of water. Farmers are really struggling and the summer fruit in the Langkloof will be way under par this year. Here in Port Elizabeth we have very strict water restrictions and if we don't get any significant rain our dams will be dry by October.
