There are big dairy farming areas to both the east and the west of Port Elizabeth producing milk not just for the Port Elizabeth area, but also beyond. Some of these farms are massive, producing thousands of litres of milk every day. Most of the cows on these farms are Jersey and Friesian cows. The ones on this farm in the Gamtoos Valley west of Port Elizabeth are Jersey cows.
I love this cow photo! I grew up in Wisconsin which is called America's dairyland. Both of my parents grew up on dairy farms but I'm a "city boy." Moooooooo
ReplyDeleteMy grandparents emigrated from Lithuania and settled in the Gamtoos Valley around 1900-06, farmed on "Aschoek" later known as "Oshoek". My father and his sisters used to go to school in Hankey on horseback.
ReplyDeleteThe valley is outstandingly beautiful. the view from Saartjie Baartman's ( Hottentot Venus) grave over the valley is one of the best in the valley.
The river flooded cyclically every 10 years or so and in the 1970s the farmhouse was lost in the floods.
Wonderful to see cows grazing as they ought to. Maybe I'd drink more milk if American cows were more natural.......
ReplyDeleteWow. I've never seen so many cows in a single field before. Very relaxing image somehow.
ReplyDeleteWishing you and your family a peaceful and love-filled 2010.
I know that herd. It is big. We once had to wait for them to to cross the road in single file, it seemed like forever.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I drive past this farm on the way to Plett I think it must be some of the loveliest farmland in the country. Lovely, restful image. All the best for 2010!
ReplyDeleteThe whole valley and river mouth is just amazing!!
