Victoria Park Crematorium

I have a fascination with cemeteries.  You can find the most interesting information, grave stones and monuments browsing through old grave yards and although I may look over my shoulder every now and then, I'm quite fine exploring them.  The Victoria Park Crematorium, built in 1953, on the other hand I just find creepy.  Don't ask me why. I just do.  Perhaps its the black smoke that you see rising up from it every now and then.  I don't know.  *shiver down my spine*

  1. So sorry you feel that way. My grandmother's ashes are there, and although I was not lucky enough to meet her in person I have always felt a strong connection to her. Over the years I have spent hours there and found it a very peaceful and beautiful place.

  2. I totally agree with you. My husband passed away last year & was cremated there - I used to avoid driving past the airport on Mondays & Thursdays which are cremation days ......

  4. Such a peaceful piece of nature, but sadly can no longer visit my loved ones to lay flowers for fear of being attacked/raped/robbed. So many incidents reported each week in the paper

  5. Now way back in 1992 I lived in Forest Hill and attended the old Cunningham Primary, and took a brave shortcut through the cemetary and emerged terrified just before the brigde! Also, in later years, whilst visiting on holiday from Joubertina, my cousin ad I would again cut through here en route to Walmer at NIGHT!

In 1997 my grandmother's funeral service was held here, although she is buried in Forest Hill Cemetary.

I think the location an a ridge amongst the disfigured trees makes it even more eerie...

    WHAT'S THAT?!

    haha...

  6. I attended a cremation service there last Thursday, my first one ever! The lowering device in the chapel was out of order so the pall bearers had to carry the coffin to the oven-room after the service. Everyone followed them, not knowing how traumatized we'd be after witnessing the operator insert the coffin into the oven. No cremation service for any close-relative of mine! I still feel sick just thinking about it.
