I love exploring old grave yards, but new cemeteries freak me out a bit doesn't quite interest me that much. The Forest Hill Cemetery between Forest Hill, Humewood and Summerstrand is one of the "active" cemeteries in town. When I say active I don't mean there are lots of night'un'life and haunting going on, I mean its where people are currently being buried. Forest Hill Cemetery is quite a big cemetery with some of the graves dating back a few years, but not much go back to far into Port Elizabeth's earlier history.
What is nice about Forest Hill Cemetary is that it has the Heroes Acre, and should be a very special memorial for a city with a very active military history such as Port Elizabeth.
ReplyDeleteUsed to drive past it on my way to work at PE Tech every morning - oftern there were burials in progress, so you are right, it is quite active. I always feel as if I'm intruding on relatives' privacy in a new cemetery...
ReplyDeleteThis brings back memories of Sunday mornings, driving there with my folks to vist my granny's grave, and stopping at the flower vendors on the side of the road to buy some "varklelies", mygranny's favourite.
ReplyDeleteAs a little girl, I used to gravehop like a little butterfly while my parents attended Ouma's grave, heeding my parents warning that it is disrespectful to step on top of the graves. With my 8-year old math I always tried to see who was the youngest person I could find on the day. It freaked me out to see those little graves with kids younger than me in them...
I can't help but think that I have a date with Forest Hill sometime in the feature...
