Monthly Theme: Paths and Passages Cora Terrace

The daily photo theme for this month is "paths and passages" and we have decided to feature Cora Terrace, which is one of the gems of Port Elizabeth Central. It is seen here in the early hours of the morning with its beautifully maintained Victorian homes.

Monthly Theme Day: Sister Cities

Port Elizabeth seems to be part of a large family, and has a few sister cities, including Tainan in Taiwan, and Jacksonville, Florida as well as Palm Desert, California,in USA!

The one I have always felt was the closest relation is Gothenberg in Sweden. When Panoramio first started on Google Earth, and there was a small community of photographers who all corresponded and knew each other, a guy called Andreas Elmquist from Gothenberg used to post pix, and I was putting a lot of Port Elizabrth pix on the site, and we often noticed how many similarities there were between the two cities.

This was reinforced when a replica of an East Indiaman wooden ship was built in Sweden, and embarked on a historic voyage along the same route to China that its counterpart would have sailed in the 18th Century. The Götheborg came to Port Elizabeth in March 2006 en route to China.

We made contact with Gothenberg Daily Photo, and agreed to swop photos, so we have given them one of the ship when it was here, and they have given us one of her triumphant return to Sweden in 2007.

Which just goes to show that, if the whole idea of sister cities is to foster international friendship and co-operation, it works!

The portal seems to be down, but I am sure as you visit the various city blogs, you will find one who has the link list posted, and you can follow those links for more sister cities.

Monthly Theme Day: My local Corner Store

This little cafe, round the corner from our house, is one of that dying breed of old fashioned family stores, which sell everything. You can't imagine how it all fits into the small space, but no matter what obscure item you ask for (enamelled coffee cup, paraffin lamp, fishing tackle, you name it) they seem to have it in stock.

It is in Richmond Hill, and as you can see from the architecture, was built some time in the 1930s. It literally is a corner store, built on a narrow triangular plot at the intersection where two streets run down the hill into another. So it is on the corner of 3 streets! It is still owned by members of the original Chinese family who started it. Last year the owner gave me copies of two treasured old family photos, which were taken in 1960. As you can see, aside from the Pepsi sign on the top, it has barely changed after all these years.

This one shows the whole family of the current owners (the man on the right was her father-in-law who owned the shop then, and the girl next to him was still at school then and is now 61!

Monthly Theme Day, numbers

There are so many ways in which numbers are invaluable in a City. House numbers, telephone numbers, dates on buildings, and of course, they are particularly significant on headstones. So much of a City's history can be gleaned from the information on old gravestones, like this one in Russell Road. There were many Irish amongst the early settlers.

April Theme Day: Water

Next time you turn on a tap and clean drinking water flows out, spare a thought for those who have to pump theirs out of the ground! This old water pump is in the courtyard at 7 Castle Hill, the oldest residence in Port Elizabeth still in existence, now a fascinating Historical Museum.

March 2008 Theme Day: Graffiti or street mural

The retaining wall of the Grand Hotel, on Whites Road, has a delightful mural depicting the Jazz Cafe inside. Sadly, the damp in the wall means it is deteriorating fast, so we are lucky to catch it while we still can. We featured another section of this mural in a previous post.

February Theme Day: When People think of PE, they think of....

Beachfront holidays, wonderful weather offering fun in the sun on sweeping expanses of white sand, safe swimming, the Pier, and the entertainment complexes around it.

January Theme, best photo of the year.

Because it is SOOOO hard trying to select our best photo for today's theme, we requested help over the last few days to decide on the best shot. Thanks to all those who checked them out and gave your opinions. Based on the results, the Rainy Day in Richmond Park is the one we are using. As we explained, because this is quite a new blog, we didn't want to redo any of the ones we have already posted just recently, so this is a new one.

So here, by popular choice, is the best PE photo.

However, I have another favourite, not taken in PE, but near Caledon on the way back from Capetown at Easter. Since some of you have already seen the one above while voting, I am also including this previously unseen one.


It was a misty morning and we left before sunrise. This is one of my favourites because it seems to say so much more than just "misty sunrise on the open road... it speaks of the joy of the journey, the open road spooling out ahead, the mystery of the landscape shrouded in mist, what does the journey hold for us? And the promise of a new dawn...... which seems very apt as we head into the misty sunrise of a New Year. What will it hold for us? Here's wishing you a great 2008!


Of course all this presupposes that we are talking about our photos. There are so many brilliant shots that we have seen in blogland this year, and it would be impossible to select just one, but we'd also like to give you a link to one which was particularly striking. We need your help! It is SOOOO hard trying to select our best photo for the 1st January Monthly theme. As this is quite a new blog, we didn't want to redo any of the ones we have already posted, so these are all new ones. We finally pinned it down to 12 (they are not the absolute best, because those were taken out of PE, but we decided to stick to PE photos for this challenge.) Please look through the slideshow, make a note of the name of the one you like best, and drop us a comment, we'd be so grateful for the help.
