South End Museum

The South End Museum on the corner of Beach Road and Walmer Boulevard is housed in the old Seamans Institute Building and remembers people and places of South End. South End was destroyed by the Apartheid Government after its people were displaced in 1965 following the implementation of the Groups Areas Act.
On the floor of the one exhibition hall visitors will find a map of old South End laid out on the floor with pictures of the area along the walls.

  1. Reminds me quite a bit of the District Six museum floor in Cape Town. A really cool way to give perspective to what was.

  3. I think this map on the floor was such a good idea, to show the old layout, and i also enjoy all the historic newspaper cuttings that have been used to wallpaper the room next door.... this museum has been really well done, hats off to the members of the old South End Community for the passion and dedication to make it a reality and keep the story alive... lest we forget!

  4. An entire city destroyed? That's awful. I am glad the museum is there so people will remember. And hopefully, so nothing like it will happen again.

  6. It would be great if all the pictures at this museum could be viewed online. Maybe a good plan for an aspirant amateur web designer and photographer to tackle.
