We were recently asked to show the upgraded Govan Mbeki Street. This is a composite shot, showing the view back towards the city hall, and showing one of the new street vendor's shelters.
I used to get off the bus on the left of this street from sydenham and then run across to the other side to catch another bus to Kabega on my way home from school. It was a long time ago and I cant remember the bus' numbers now.My Mum used to work in the OK Bazaars and for a short while I used to go to Benny Oshers Gym down a side street there.I often think about that gym and... "who was Benny Osher?" Memories..
Oh my goodness, my grandfather used to have a section of Benny Oshers gym, where he did rehabilitation and massage, I've been chatting to my dad and trying to get to know more about my grandad as he died when I was very very young and I unfortunately didn't get to know him, I believe my grandmother used to help him mange his gym, she I did fortunately get to know as she was such an amazing woman and I miss her dearly. If anyone has information or photos of Benny oshers gym I would be eternaly greatful
I went to Benny's gym in newton park for about two years... abslutley loved it and wa dedicated to the work out, i became very strong and fit (circa 1976) and my work out buddy was an older deaf guy he lived on my route home and we used to jog through a shady area in the dark after the workout, safety in numbers.. I was all of 13/14. The one day, the big gym brutes called him out of the shower, and when he got to the office, they handed him the phone and thought it was very funny... he went completely ballistic and lost it, hitting and breaking everything in site... he stopped going to gym and I had to stop to, because from the gym to where i stayed, was not safe to go alone, so i took up cycling.. and then, i messed it all up, by discovering girls.... :-(
Thanks so much for the photo, I would like to see how it look with the traffic and hawkers during a busy day. Can you please get opposite view?
ReplyDeleteIf you can please also show us parliament street.
Keep up the good work.
The upgrade truely was an improvement for the area. Now if they can only sort out the illegal parking in that lane, everything will be hunky dory.
ReplyDeletewow, nice.
