Veld fire

I was going through some older pictures I took some time ago and found this one which I haven't posted before. The veld fire was burning in the Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve and the picture was taken as we were driving over the Van Stadens River Bridge going towards Port Elizabeth.

  1. This is an amazing shot. Very clear and sharp. What are the specs in the smoke? Debris? Birds?

  3. Yikes! How very dramatic! I hope you didn't keep driving into the middle of that mess!

  4. DanJ - I took the pic through the front screen of the vehicle I was in, so the specs may possibly be dirt on the glass.
Jacob - Luckily the road swings to the left just after the bridge so the fire was on our right. You could feel the heat though.

  5. Great pic - scary event though. My brother and his then-girlfriend were involved in a smash in smoke just like that at Van Stadens in the early 1990s. Traffic had stopped in the smoke and they did not even see the car in front of them until the last second. they managed to brake in time, but the car behind them didn't so they were caught in the middle. Luckily no major injuries!!
