This is an exhibit in the fascinating Red Location museum.
It shows anti apartheid posters which were circulated when the restrictions were at their worst, anyone found with one of these would have been in for a very bad time! The books on the little tables are transcripts of the proceedings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, chaired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, with the intention of bringing into the open the atrocities committed during the apartheid era. They make very chilling reading, but many families who lost loved ones in horrible circumstances were able to achieve some form of closure through this process.
I would dearly love to see this exhibit! I taught a South Africa unit for years with a history colleague to 16-yr-old students. I also visited SA twice and gathered lots of information about Apartheid and post-Apartheid. Also had dinner with one of your Constitutional Judges, Albe Sachs. What a man. Wonderful photo!
ReplyDeleteThat dinner with Albe Sachs must have been wonderful, he is highly respected. I keep being drawn back to the museum, it is so emotionally charged with the pain of the past, mingled with hope for the future, that you almost have to take it in bite size pieces! But i will continue to feature aspects of it from time to time. Did you ever follow the link to the first post i did on it, on my personal blog? it was at http://arty-fartying-around.blogspot.com/2007/08/interesting-detour.html
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting exhibit!
ReplyDeleteI don't know why exactly but it reminds me of the peace memorial in Berlin.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great exhibit. I'd love to be able to see it.
