The end of an era - Mastertons

Anyone in PE who is a fan of good coffee will know Mastertons, in Russell Road. Funnily enough, it is not so much for the lovely aroma, because they don't brew coffee there, but roast it, so the smell in the street is often more acrid than delicious, but they produce wonderful blends. Sadly, I saw in the press recently that they are soon to close down, as the old man wants to retire, and his son is not keen to take over the business. Pity... another one bites the dust.

  1. Nooooooo! Please don't tell me that Masterton's is closing, this is terrible news ... where did you read this? I don't remember seeing anything in The Herald, and the knock and drops are closed over Christmas ...

  3. That is tragic--Mastertons is another page from my childhood! I would go there with Dad on Saturday mornings to get coffee beans. When we got home, I used to nibble on a few, and help Dad to grind them by hand in his little box grinder. I don't remember the smell being acrid--just delicious! Is the pet shop still next door?

  4. Say what! I really hope this doesn't happen. If the son does not want to take it over, the old man should sell it. I would imagine that there will be several takers.

  5. Oh no - that's terrible! Like Firefly says, surely there must be so much goodwill in the business that somebody would want to buy it?? I always *love* that smell of that roasting coffee. One of the happiest Christmas holidays of my life was spent at the house of a boyfriend's parents round the corner, and the smell of Masterton's coffee and the St George's band playing Sexy Eyes at the cricket instantly take me back to that wonderful time.

  6. Good morning all. This was brought to our attention by a customer, so I'd like to take this opportunity to put your minds at ease and say that Masterton's Coffee Specialists will not be closing down, and at no point has there been an article in the media stating that we would. We have been supplying coffee and tea to the public and hospitality industry of Port Elizabeth and surrounds since 1924 and intend on doing so for many more years to come. As such, I would appreciate this post being altered so as not to mislead the public.

    Thank you,
    Regards,
    Ryler Masterton

  7. Ryler and James, thanks for setting the record straight, and SO sorry for posting the wrong info, I WISH I could remember where I saw it! Just goes to show that I should not believe everything I read and neither should any of you! We would never knowingly post incorrect info like this. Anyway, coffee lovers the world over can heave a sigh of relief, your favourite coffee supplier is alive and well, and as you will see if you read the latest post, is going from strength to strength!

  8. Generational disinterest and the demise of small businesses seems to be an unfortunate trend across the globe. Thanks for your visit; it's good to hear from you again!!
