Richmond Hill shipping beacon

Very few people know that there is a shipping beacon situated on top of Richmond Hill.  The beacon assists with ships entering and exiting the Port Elizabeth Harbour and plays quite an important part in Algoa Bay's shipping lanes.  A couple of years ago a developer started construction on an apartment block in the vicinity.  Now I'm not going to go into all the politics and red tape of building plans and approvals because I don't know the story, but at some stage the municipality realised that the building will be obstructing the beacon from the sea and stopped the development.  I'm sure the developers are still fighting the whole thing, but that's not what this blog is about.  This blog is about a shipping beacon.

  1. I always enjoy PEDP, especially when the skies are an uninterrupted blue like this - something we are short of in the UK.
I am not likely to copy, transmit or store which the web site says you would need to approve but recently I have been seeing a new black panel on photos 'click here to share' and suggesting that I email, print or send the photo by Facebook. Would you like to explain the current situation to readers sometime please.
    Best wishes

  2. The share button as well as the click to share frame on the picture allows you to share the whole blog and not safe or share just the picture. I really don't mind if somebody shares or stores a picture for their own enjoyment or to show it to their friends, but there are people out there that take pictures off websites and use it in publications or their own website to generate or attract business for themselves without the photographer's permission. That is wrong. I have taken the black block off the photos though, it was getting a bit irritating. Thanks for the comment.

  3. Sounds exactly like the kind of thing that would happen here in Leeds, apart from the fact that we are around 60 miles to the nearest bit of coastline. Though I suspect that would not necessarily stop them trying.

  4. Even when the development was in the planning stage, the owners were informed about that beacon but still pushed ahead until they were stopped by an interdict ...
